With the announcement of Dr. Kay-Wyatt's retirement effective October 1, 2026 - the School Board has launched its search for the next superintendent.

We have partnered with Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates (HYA), a nationally recognized executive search firm specializing in educational leadership recruitment, to facilitate the superintendent search process.

How the search will work

Here is the timeline (Please note dates during the search process may change):

  • June 1-12, 2026: Community Engagement

    • Community Survey released

    • Focus groups and community meetings will be held

  • Late June 2026: Leadership Profile Development

    • Finalize leadership profile and desired characteristics for the next Superintendent - including feedback collected from the community.

  • June - August 2026: Recruitment and Candidate Outreach

    • Active recruitment and application process

  • August 12, 2026: Application Deadline

    • Candidate submissions close

  • September 2026: Finalist Interviews

    • Conduct confidential interviews with selected candidates. This approach is standard in executive searches and helps us attract the top candidates.

  • October 2026: Selection Announcement

    • Announce the new Superintendent

How you can have your voice heard

Input from all parts of the Alexandria - students, staff, families and community members - is vital during this process. The data and feedback collected from all of this will help to develop the leadership profile and criteria for the selection of the next ACPS superintendent.

Community engagement sessions

Currently we have two planned where community members can discuss things like, educational priorities for ACPS, strengths and opportunities within the school division, leadership qualities desired in the next superintendent and the future direction of ACPS.

  • June 4, 2026 - 6pm VIRTUAL via Zoom

  • June 10, 2026 - 6pm IN PERSON at Alexandria City High School – Minnie Howard Campus Forum (First Floor) 3775 W. Braddock Rd. Alexandria, VA 22302

Community Survey

Open from June 1-12, 2026 - Please find the survey below.

The School Board and HYA will also be forming Stakeholder Focus Groups. These groups include:
