06.11.26 Governance Committee Update

The Governance Committee has officially concluded for the year and will meet again in the fall. I wanted to highlight two things:

1: On the consent calendar we approved proposals to the Virginia School Board Association (VSBA)’s legislative positions. We have two positions we are asking the VSBA to put into their legislative positions.

• Reforming school funding here in Virginia, shifting from resource based funding model to student based funding model.

• Increasing the option for increasing school board chair pay - related to a bill from Senator Bennet-Parker introduced last session and that we hope will bring up again in this session

These are separate from the ACPS legislative positions that we will work on again next fall. 

2: During the annual School Board organizational meeting in July, there will be a bundle of policy changes that are obligatory changes stemming from the 2026 Virginia General Assembly session. We need to do these to meet our legal obligations for laws going into effect July 1st. There were many bills that went through this General Assembly Session, hence a lot of accompanying policy changes.
