Dear Alexandria City Public Schools Community,
On behalf of the Alexandria City School Board, I want to provide an update on our search for the next superintendent of Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS).
The School Board understands the importance of this decision and the responsibility we have to identify a leader who will build upon the work underway across ACPS while providing the vision and leadership necessary to move our school division forward. Following our School Board meeting last Thursday, I am pleased to share that we have attracted a strong and highly qualified pool of candidates from across the country.
Over the next several weeks, the School Board will interview selected candidates and carefully consider their experience, leadership qualities and ability to meet the needs of our students, staff, families and broader Alexandria community.
As we move through this phase, I want to reiterate that the candidate selection and interview process is confidential. The identities of candidates will not be shared publicly. Maintaining confidentiality is consistent with executive-level search processes and is important to identifying highly qualified candidates, including individuals currently serving in leadership positions elsewhere.
The School Board remains on schedule with the process and plans to provide another update prior to October. We recognize the significance of this appointment and remain committed to conducting a thoughtful and thorough process as we select the individual who will lead ACPS into its next chapter.
I also want to take this opportunity to express the School Board's appreciation to Acting Superintendent Dr. Grace Taylor for providing experienced and steady leadership during this transition. I want to note that Dr. Taylor did not apply for the permanent superintendent position. Her focus remains on leading ACPS as acting superintendent, supporting our students and staff, and maintaining stability and continuity across the school division until the School Board appoints the next superintendent and that individual is able to begin serving in the role.
The selection of a superintendent is among the most important responsibilities entrusted to a School Board. We appreciate the community's continued patience, engagement and trust as we work to identify a leader.
Sincerely,
Christopher Harris
Chair
Alexandria City School Board
