The work of the School Board spans meetings, work sessions, and community conversations. We know that folks don’t always have the time to attend, watch every meeting, or follow every detail; that’s why you elected us - to do the work and make the best decisions we can on behalf of Alexandria. This is a look at how our policy, planning, and student-centered decisions are shaped, why they matter, how we got there, and where we are headed.​

What You'll Find Here

Posts that reflect the work and decision-making process of the Board, including:

  • Major Board Decisions - such as topic explainers, plans and timelines, non-confidential materials the Board is reviewing, feedback from the community, individual Board member statements, relevant progress updates, and vote results
     

  • Board Areas of Responsibility - such as information on Board Advisory Committees and Student Representatives to the Board
     

  • Celebrations & Spotlights - of ACPS students, staff, community members, and ACPS partners

  • ​Improving Community Awareness of Non-ACPS public activities - such as upcoming elections, community events, civic engagement opportunities, etc.

We aim to share information that is:

  • Clear and understandable

  • Constructive and respectful

  • Factual and reflective of Board actions

  • Relevant and timely

  • Helpful to the broader community, not just those closely following Board meetings

What You Won't Find Here

  • Personal blogs or opinion pieces from individual members
     

  • Individual perspectives presented as Board consensus
     

  • Supporting campaigns of individual Board members or political parties. General content, such as reminders to vote, is permitted
     

  • Content that directly conflicts with or calls into question other ACPS-published material

  • ​Disclosure of confidential information
     

  • Disclosure of personnel records
     

  • Disclosure of identifiable student information without the written permission of a parent or adult student
     

  • False information
     

  • Information that the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) allows ACPS to withhold, such as advice of division counsel, information shared in closed meetings, safety and security plans, medical records, and personnel investigations.

Please keep in mind that while healthy disagreements occur, this site focuses on the process and outcomes, rather than arguments.

During School Board Election Season

We will pause personal statements by Board members who are certified as candidates once the June filing deadline passes and they are on the ballot through the November election.

 

During this time, the site focuses on:

  • Committee updates
     

  • Key votes and major topics
     

  • Topic explainers
     

  • Official statements from the Board Chair on behalf of the full board.

This approach ensures the site remains focused on Board work and not on individual campaigns.

Note on Board Collaboration

To comply with Virginia’s open meeting and sunshine laws, the School Board Chair appoints two Board members as Site Co-Editors. When a blog reflects a committee's work, one member may draft it and invite co-signers, but it's not a group writing session.

This site is managed by the School Board Office and is governed by Policy BGA in Board Docs.
